When is abortion ok?
Abortion is a controversial issue.
There are two sides to the argument, those who are pro-life and
those who are pro-choice.
One of the biggest arguments against abortion is that life begins at
conception and as such termination a foetus is akin to murder.
On the other hand, pro-choice proponents argue that nearly all
abortions take place very early in a pregnancy when the foetus
cannot exist outside of the mother’s womb and therefore shouldn’t
be seen as a life on its own.
These are just two of the points made both for and against
abortion.
The concern tends to be over whether or not the foetus is a life, but
what about the life of the mother? In what cases are abortions
acceptable?
One famous case that attracted a firestorm of international outrage
was that of 10-year-old girl in Paraguay who was allegedly raped
and impregnated by her stepfather. When her plight came to light,
she was already 22 weeks into the pregnancy; she was denied an
abortion.
According to a number of reports, the now 11-year-old girl gave
birth via C-section at a Red Cross hospital in Paraguay’s capital city.
In Paraguay abortions are only allowed if the mother’s life is in
danger, regardless of whether or not the child is the product of a
rape.
In the case of the pregnant pre-teen, health officials denied the
request for an abortion because she appeared to be healthy; the
decision drew harsh criticism from around the world.
Erika Guevara, an Amnesty International director, said in a statement
that though the young girl is lucky to be alive, “Only time will tell the
true extent of the physical and psychological consequences of her
tragic ordeal.”
Her survival, Guevara said “does not excuse the human rights
violations she suffered at the hands of the Paraguayan authorities,
who decided to gamble with her health, life and integrity despite
overwhelming evidence that this pregnancy was extremely risky and
despite the fact that she was a rape-victim and a child.”
At 11-years-old the girl is now a mother to what is suspected to be
her 42-year-old stepfather’s child.
