Zika virus could spread in coming months – WHO

Zika virus is expected to spread in Europe within the next few months, the World Health Organisation has disclosed.

First seen in Brazil last year, the mosquito-borne virus has been detected in more than 50 countries and has been linked to thousands of cases of microcephaly, a rare birth defect marked by unusually small head size.

In an assessment, WHO Europe, which made the assessment, said aalthough it has classified the risk of an outbreak at low to moderate, the risk should not be underestimated.

It is highest on the island of Madeira and the Black Sea coast of Russia and Georgia, where the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that are responsible for most of the infections are indigenous.

But the risk is still considered moderate in 18 countries where a different mosquito, Aedes albopictus, breeds. Although this mosquito is not as efficient at spreading the virus as Aedes aegypti, it has been shown to be a potential transmitter of the virus in Africa, Mexico and in lab experiments.

France is the most likely to have a Zika outbreak among those countries with a moderate risk, because of factors including the density of its urban population, WHO Europe said.

It is followed by Italy, Malta, Croatia, Israel, Spain, Monaco, San Marino, Turkey, Greece, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Georgia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. The risk in the UK is low.

The WHO assessment concerns the likelihood of the virus spreading in late spring to summer if nothing is done to stop it. It is based on the presence of Zika virus-transmitting mosquitoes, a suitable climate for establishment of mosquitoes, a history of transmission of dengue or chikungunya, ship and flight connections, population density and urbanisation.

But it also considered the capacity of countries in Europe to respond – and most would do so efficiently and fast. Because of that, it classifies the Europe-wide risk as low to moderate.

“The new evidence published today tells us that there is a risk of spread of Zika virus disease in the European region and that this risk varies from country to country,” Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO regional director for Europe.

“With this risk assessment, we at WHO want to inform and target preparedness work in each European country based on its level of risk. We call particularly on countries at higher risk to strengthen their national capacities and prioritise the activities that will prevent a large Zika outbreak.”

WHO based its assessment of how well countries would respond on their answers to a questionnaire. The results suggested that 79% – 41 states out of 51 in the European region plus Lichtenstein – have good or very good capacity although on specific issues there was substantial variation.

Russia and Georgia already deal with mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, said WHO officials. Asked whether they were engaging with WHO on the issue of Zika, Dr Nedret Emiroglu, who heads WHO Europe’s division of communicable diseases and health security, said: “We are in close touch with them.” they and Madeira have been invited to a meeting in Portugal in June to discuss the control of Zika across the region.

Countries with a high or moderate risk are being urged to take stronger measures to stop the spread of mosquitoes and reduce their numbers, including encouraging communities to get rid of pooled water that can form a breeding ground.

Health professionals should be trained and equipped to detect Zika infection and report it within 24 hours. Pregnant women should be enabled to protect themselves from infection, including through sexual transmission.

In February, the WHO declared a global health emergency over the Zika virus.

Touching! Read what Igbo woman living in Borno said about the place

Editor’s note : The Boko Haram insurgency in the north east has torn the region apart and once peaceful places have now been people’s nightmare.

One Mrs Chidinma who hails from the south east says she has been in Borno for 30 years and prays for the state to return the peaceful old times.

Mrs Chidinma’s touching story “I’ve lived in Maiduguri for 30years. I love the town because of how peaceful it was before the insurgency.

“But because of the attacks, it has lost some of its peaceful nature. Some many were killed, others were rendered homeless, our business suffered because the borders were closed. The insurgency has dealt with us seriously.

“Notwithstanding we pray to God to restore peace. We feel there is nothing more than God. We pray that God in His infinite mercy rescues us and brings back peace to Borno State. It is a place we love and cherish. My younger ones were Borno here.

“We also beg the Borno State government to come to our aid. Most of our women are widows, some are homeless, our finances are down, we have lots of orphans. “But still, forget the insurgency issue for a minute, we love this place. We love the people. They are have a peaceful nature. Even the late Shehu he was available to us the Igbo community anytime we went to him. “We pray peace returns so we can trust each other again and that we have full confidence in each other like before; you come to my house, I eat in your house and sit down like brothers and sisters as we often do” This opinion first appeared in Bits of Borno

Breaking! Fuel subsidy removed; new price of fuel revealed

The federal government of Nigeria has removed subsidy on fuel and it will now start to sell for N145 per litre. This removal was made on Wednesday, May 11. Until the removal, the official price of petrol was N87 per litre although consumers have been paying as much as N200 for fuel due to scarcity. Ibe Kachikwu and President Muhammadu Buhari The removal in fuel subsidy has been a lingering issue since President Muhammadu Buhari took over power. The minister of state for petroleum product, Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu had said that the citizens were not benefitting from the subsidy which made it necessary to be removed. An official in the petroleum industry had earlier said the federal government would deregulate the downstream sector of the Nigerian petroleum industry so as to put an end to scarcity. The petroleum minister in a statement said the decision was taken based on the current challenges and that Nigerians have been paying exorbitant prices for fuel. We have just finished a meeting of various stakeholders presided over by His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The meeting had in attendance the Leadership of the Senate, House of Representatives, Governors Forum, and Labour Unions (NLC, TUC, NUPENG, and PENGASSAN). class=”text_exposed_show”> The meeting reviewed: “The current fuel scarcity and supply difficulties in the country. “The exorbitant prices being paid by Nigerians for the product. These prices range on the average from N150 to N250 per litre currently.

“The meeting also noted that the main reason for the current problem is the inability of importers of petroleum products to source foreign exchange at the official rate due to the massive decline of foreign exchange earnings of the federal government. As a result, private marketers have been unable to meet their approximate 50% portion of total national supply of PMS. Following a detailed presentation by the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, it has now become obvious that the only option and course of action now open to the government is to take the following decisions:

“In order to increase and stabilise the supply of the product, any Nigerian entity is now free to import the product, subject to existing quality specifications and other guidelines issued by Regulatory Agencies. ” All Oil Marketers will be allowed to import PMS on the basis of FOREX procured from secondary sources and accordingly PPPRA template will reflect this in the pricing of the product.

“Pursuant to this, PPPRA has informed me that it will be announcing a new price band effective today, 11th May, 2016 and that the new price for PMS will not be above N145 per litre.

“We expect that this new policy will lead to improved supply and competition and eventually drive down pump prices, as we have experienced with diesel. In addition, this will also lead to increased product availability and encourage investments in refineries and other parts of the downstream sector. It will also prevent diversion of petroleum products and set a stable environment for the downstream sector in Nigeria.

“We share the pains of Nigerians but, as we have constantly said, the inherited difficulties of the past and the challenges of the current times imply that we must take difficult decisions on these sorts of critical national issues. Along with this decision, the federal government has in the 2016 budget made an unprecedented social protection provision to cushion the current challenges. “We believe in the long term, that improved supply and competition will drive down prices.

“The DPR and PPPRA have been mandated to ensure strict regulatory compliance including dealing decisively with anyone involved in hoarding petroleum products.” The vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo hinted earlier on Wednesday that Nigeria had reached a point where tough decisions had to be taken.

He said: “No matter how we slice it, we are in economic times that are challenging, but they provide us with some of the best opportunities for making a real difference in our economic life.

“I think that we are at a point that a lot has been said about subsidies and what to do with subsidies. I think we are at a point where we must make many difficult decisions and make very tough choices.

“But I think the Nigerian people are prepared for all what is required and all it would take to make a real difference. “In no way can a country make the kind of progress we expect it to make without being able to ensure that in public life our finance system is transparent and would ensure that there is accountability.”

Two elderly women suspected to be witches have died after they were forced to drink holy water.

Two elderly women suspected to be witches have died after they were forced to drink holy water.

According to reports, the 2 elderly Zimbabwean women died after they were forced by their children to attend the church service. During the service, 76- year-old Erita Bhebhe and Jessy Mutero, age unknown, collapsed and died at Baba Wechishanu Wenguwo Tsvuku Church.

B-Metro reports that Prophet Pira, the church leader and custodian had initially said if the women drank the water they would die if they were witches but live if they were not. The two boys who forced the women to the church were caught after they both gave similar stories of their mothers’ deaths, raising the suspicion of family members.

“Joshua and Edica tried to cover up the issue after realising that their mothers died at church. They took them home leaving each one of them in her kitchen hut. The grandchildren, realizing that there was something wrong, told neighbours who then confirmed them dead and alerted other family members.

“The other children, hearing what had transpired prior to their mothers’ deaths reported the matter to the police and their corpses were taken for post-mortem in Bulawayo. The results revealed that the two women died of poisoning,” said a family source.

The two boys confessed the crime to the police after they were arrested. “Joshua and Edica were picked up by police for questioning and they revealed that their mothers died after drinking water which was given to them by Prophet Pira,” the source added.

Latest report by the telecoms industry regulator has reaffirmed Globacom as market leader in internet services in Nigeria.

The industry statistics for the first quarter of 2016 revealed that Globacom had a total of 26,530,420 data subscribers as at March 31, 2016, indicating an addition of 1,448,354 new customers in the first three months of the year.

In January, the company garnered 354,178 new data users, 248,593 in February and 845, 583 in March.

The total figures recorded by Globacom represent 80 percent of the total number of 1,820, 651 new data users who subscribed to internet services provided by the four major telecom operators in the country from January to March 2016.

This steady increase in data subscribers for Globacom has been ascribed to the company’s recent improvement in network quality and its continuous development of new offerings that offer unbeatable values to various market segments. Some of these offerings are the Campus Booster, Twin Bash and attractive data plans.

However, the figures for the other operators are not as cheery. Within the first quarter of 2016, Airtel recorded a total of 319, 229 new data users, while Etisalat pulled 53, 068 new internet users.

Both networks account for the remaining 20 percent of new internet users for the first three months of this year.

The worst hit was MTN which lost over 6,500,000 internet users during the period. The network began the quarter with 39, 924, 737 data users on its network and ended it with 33,356,595.

Globacom has in recent time remained consistent as the preferred choice for new internet subscribers. For instance, at the end of last quarter of 2015, it was the only network that recorded an increase in its internet subscriber base with an addition of 3.2m new internet subscribers.

MTN, Airtel and Etisalat all lost data subscribers. MTN lost almost 2 million subscribers, Airtel lost close to 900,000 subscribers, while Etisalat lost 408,282 subscribers.

click to see the lady who legally married two men..read to know how she sleeps with two of them.. what a life

A woman who married two men ‘legally’ has reportedly devised a means of sleeping with each of them. Nigerian Tribune reports that the woman, Amina Kabir, is currently standing trial before the Jibiya upper sharia court, Katsina, over her acts which are contrary to sharia law of the state. The prosecutor informed the court that the woman married her first husband in 1994, and hooked up with the second just about five months ago. According to him, the first husband, identified as Kabir Mohammed, lives in Jibiya, while Shamsu Saulawa, the new lover, lives in Katsina township. He said: “My Lord, anytime, she wants to sleep with one of them, she will tell the other that she will be travelling to either Jibiya or Katsina.” Hindatu, one of the accused woman’s friends, was said to have let the cat out of the bag after an issue that sprang up between the pair. “Her first husband who witnessed the quarrel thought that Hindatu wanted to paint his wife black and thus he decided to sue her for defaming Amina,” the prosecutor added. Hindatu’s interrogation where she revealed that she witnessed her friend’s marriage ceremonies to both men, was attended by a large number of people. Alhaji Kabir Hamisu Bello, the presiding judge, adjourned the case till May 9 for further hearing. Recently, a woman made a shocking confession of how she cheated with her husband with a man she met on the social media. She said: “I cheated on my husband so I’m burning inside, and by the way, I need reasonable comments. I am 39 and married with 3 kids. I was a virgin before I got married to my husband and the only one I’d sex with. “I met a man on social media, Facebook to be precise, and we became friends and got very close. “Mr. J wanted to meet me face to face and we made arrangements to meet. The day he saw me, he couldn’t resist me.”

And too much alcohol is going to make one feel sleepy, tired and lost interest in sex. Therefore moderation is a key factor.

5. Erection problems Men with erectile dysfunction (ED) often worry about how they will be able to perform sexually and that worry can drain their sexual desire. This issue can be treated and couples can also work together to keep it from affecting their relationship.

6. Problems with partner For many women emotional closeness is an essential prelude to sexual intimacy. Problems with spouse can be a huge contributive factor to low sex drive.
