With all the superhero movies coming out nowadays, there’s a lot of money to be made. The Avengers alone made $1.5 billion worldwide according to IMDb , while franchises like Spider-Man have made a habit of breaking box office records. Way back before they were cash cows though, Marvel saw their various superheroes as commodities to be sold off to make a quick buck. Starting as early as 1985, franchises were offered up to studios like Sony, 20th Century Fox, and more, culminating in a whole mess of reasons now why Marvel can’t bring characters they themselves created into the cinematic fold. Each studio with a Marvel property keeps it jealously guarded, knowing full well the moneymaking potential each respective franchise represents. While it would make sense for the rights to return to their original creators, the current owners have kept an iron grip since they first acquired their various properties. 1.) Spider-Man Owned by: Sony Pictures (and Marvel, sort of)
Source: Sony Eight years before Marvel Studios even existed, the comic book publishing house sold the rights to Spider-Man, and so ensued a series of acquisitions and contracts that eventually landed it at Sony Pictures. They in turn raked in over an estimated $800 million at worldwide box offices with their first movie, spawning two more sequels and an eventual series reboot. However, since the release of The Amazing Spider Man 2 , the franchise came to a screeching halt in the wake of sub-par box office returns. A recent bargain struck between Marvel and Sony though has blurred the lines of ownership. The agreement reached by both studios goes as follows: Marvel can include Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War , and can continue to have him appear in future properties. Sony will reboot and recast Spider-Man themselves, and both studios will keep their own box office returns for the web- slingers respective appearances. 2.) The Fantastic Four Owned by: 20th Century Fox
Source: Marvel Back in 2005, 20th Century Fox thought they had the next big movie franchise when they released their Fantastic 4 movie. However, after one flop of a sequel, the franchise remained dormant until this year, when Fox released a similarly reviled reboot . Despite the reboot’s failure, there’s still a planned sequel in the works for 2017 , as Fox clearly is reluctant to let go of this one without at least trying to go out in a blaze of glory. The big problem here is that any new character created within this universe by Marvel in the comics automatically becomes the property of Fox. This has all led to speculation the actual comic book for Fantastic Four could come to a permanent end as a result of this strange deal. Marvel even reportedly issued an edict where, according to AV Club , writers are “forbidden to create new characters,” lest they end up in Fox’s pocket in theaters. In an even stranger turn of events, rumors flew around that Marvel and Fox had apparently come to an accord over the rights, putting the Fantastic Four firmly back in Marvel’s hands. Both studios soon came out and refuted this, but it still makes us wonder: Is something in the works? Perhaps it was a preliminary deal that has yet to be finalized, or maybe even worse, an agreed-upon deal fell through at the last second. 3.) X-Men Owned by: 20th Century Fox (Sort of)
Source: 20th Century Fox Bryan Singer’s X-Men back in 2000 found itself as the first commercial success for a superhero movie, getting the ball rolling for the next decade plus to come of franchises. But 20th Century Fox’s rights for the X-Men contain some strange loopholes. First and foremost, they completely own the right to the term “mutant,” and by extension any characters who are part of the X-Men in the comic universe. On the other end, Marvel owns the rights to the Avengers, and any character who was a primary member of that team in print. Two characters, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, have historically been members of both superhero teams, making it so both Marvel and Fox have the films rights to them. Is your head spinning yet? Because it’s about to get worse. Fox’s ownership of the word “mutant” makes it so the Avengers lose Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch’s origin stories as Magneto’s offspring (and by extension mutants), but not the characters themselves. What Marvel’s done instead is claim they were part of experiments by Hydra to create superhumans, integrating them into Age of Ultron. The legal rights to each are incredibly twisted and convoluted, but when this much money is on the line it’s always going to be. 4.) Deadpool Owned by: 20th Century Fox
Source: Marvel Back in 2009, we saw our first ever film appearance from Deadpool , the iconic fourth-wall-breaking merc with a mouth. He was played by Ryan Reynolds, and in the end gave us a version of the character that only served to anger fans when he ended up as a mouthless mutant zombie. However, fans were pleased to learn that Reynolds will be getting another shot at the role in a brand new reboot, giving the popular character a much-needed redemption in theaters. The positive buzz around the reboot has even led Fox to confirm that a Deadpool sequel is already in the works . But as a character at least loosely affiliated with the X-Men , his rights belong solely to Fox for the foreseeable future. Sorry, Marvel. 5.) The Silver Surfer Owned by: 20th Century Fox
Source: 20th Century Fox We saw the Silver Surfer show up in the second Fantastic Four movie, but since then he hasn’t been seen or heard from again. As an iconic character that really could hold his own franchise, it’s baffling to say the least to see him sidelined the way he has been in the cinematic universe. Maybe it’s the fact that Fox doesn’t predict a silver space alien will connect with audiences, or perhaps they intend to reintegrate him back into the upcoming Fantastic Four sequel. Whatever the reason, the Surfer has remained curiously absent. Marvel Studios likely saw the same franchise opportunity, in an alleged proposal by Marvel Studios reported by Collider back in 2012, where they would have sent the rights to Daredevil over to Fox in exchange for the Silver Surfer (and by extension the rights to the galaxy-crushing super-villain Galactus as well). Alas, the trade never came to fruition, leaving the Surfer in the hands of Fox. 6.) Namor Owned by: Universal (maybe?)

Known as “The Sub- Mariner, ” he’s the Marvel equivalent to DC’s Aquaman , often finding himself crossing paths with the X-Men and the Avengers. But neither Universal nor Marvel (allegedly) completely own the rights to his character. Comicbook.com details the long, strange saga , where, despite owning some form of rights to Namor, Marvel still can’t greenlight a movie thanks to legal complications with Universal. That same article cites a quote from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, saying that while they technically retain rights, “there are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it.” Whatever that means, there’s one thing that’s certain: We won’t be seeing the Sub-Mariner in theaters any time soon.

Gustin is the only confirmed member of The Flash cast set to appear in the episode. Melissa Benoist leads the cast of Supergirl as the title character alongside Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, Jenna Dewan Tatum as Lucy Lane (sister of Lois), David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, Peter Facinelli as Maxwell Lord, with Dean Cain and Helen Slater. The Flash stars Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/The Flash, Candice Patton as Iris West, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramo, Tom Cavanagh as Dr. Harrison Wells and Jesse L. Martin as Detective Joe West. This season also sees the addition of newcomers Teddy Sears as Jay Garrick, Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West and Candyman himself Tony Todd as the voice of the new “big bad,” Zoom. After breaking box office records in its debut last weekend, most expected Deadpool to remain on top in its second frame, facing three new movies opening in wide release. This unconventional superhero movie squared off against Focus Features' biopic Race , Sony's drama Risen and A24's critically-acclaimed horror-thriller The Witch. But, as expected, the numbers from Box Office Mojo reveal that none of them came close to dethroning the Merc With the Mouth. Deadpool dominated once again with a second- weekend total of $55 million. While the opening weekend numbers are obviously of critical importance to any movie's success, the second weekend often indicates how much longevity a film may have in theaters. With Deadpool still riding high on plenty of critical buzz (84% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and positive word-of-mouth. The movie dropped 58.5% in its second weekend, despite being shown in 164 more theaters for a theater count of 3,722. A second-weekend drop between 50% and 60% is becoming par for the course for blockbusters like Deadpool, but it's still a tad on the high side. Kung Fu Panda 3 remained in second place with $12.5 million, followed by Risen in third with $11.8 million, The Witch in fourth place with $8.6 million and How to Be Single rounding out the top 5 with $8.2 million. The third newcomer, Race , opened in sixth place with $7.2 million After receiving a slew of positive reviews , with an 84% "Fresh" Rotten Tomatoes rating, Deadpool shattered the record for highest grossing R-rated opening weekend of $91.7 million, held for 13 years by The Matrix Reloaded . It also broke Fifty Shades of Grey's February record of $85.1 million, along with its four-day President's Day weekend record ($93 million), the record for highest-grossing R-rated comic book adaptation (300 , $70.8 million), largest winter opening weekend ( American Sniper , $89.2 million) and it became the biggest opening ever for 20th Century Fox, surpassing 2005's Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith record of $108.4 million. Deadpool's domestic tally is now $235.3 million, with an additional $256.5 million internationally for a worldwide total of $491.8 million. The movie was produced on just a $58 million budget, which is quite low for your average superhero movie. It's also worth noting that, last month, early projections predicted the highly-anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will earn $154 million on its opening weekend, and that's with a PG-13 rating and two of the most beloved heroes on the planet featured in the same movie. Obviously, those numbers could, and most likely will, change, especially since Deadpool's early projections put it between $55 million and $60 million. Still, for Deadpool to earn so much with the restrictive R rating, opening higher than all of the other X-Men movies, could provide a wake- up call to studios that may lead to more R-rated superhero movies. The faith-based drama Risen tells the epic New Testament story of the first forty days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ through the eyes of an agnostic Roman Centurion charged by Pontius Pilate to investigate rumors of a risen Jewish Messiah and locate the missing deceased body of Jesus of Nazareth in order to subdue an imminent uprising in Jerusalem. The film boasts an impressive cast including Tom Felton , Joseph Fiennes , Cliff Curtis and Stephen Greif . Kevin Reynolds writes and directs his first film in a decade, following 2006's Tristan & Isolde. Race is based on the incredible true story of Jesse Owens (Stephan James ), the legendary athletic superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy. Race is an enthralling film about courage, determination, tolerance, and friendship, and an inspiring drama about one man's fight to become an Olympic legend. Jason Sudeikis , Jeremy Irons , Carice van Houten , Amanda Crew , William Hurt headline a stellar cast in this true story biopic , directed by Stephen Hopkins . Rounding out the top 10 this weekend are Race ($7.2 million), Zoolander 2 ($5.5 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($3.83 million), The Revenant ($3.8 million) and Hail, Caesar! ($2.6 million). The Witch has an impressive 87% RT score, wowing critics on the festival circuit all last year after debuting at Sundance. Risen has a 59% RT score, with Race posting a 60% score. The story is set in the early 1600s, decades before the Salem Witch Trials, centering on an English farmer who relocates his family to a plot of land on the edge of a forest, where a supernatural presence is said to lurk. Newcomer Anya Taylor- Joy stars as the farmer's teenager daughter Thomasin, who has been accused of being a witch in this shocking thriller from writer-director Robert Eggers . Also opening in limited release is Embrace of the Serpent , Neerja and Busco Novio Para Mi Mujer . Looking ahead to next weekend, three new movies will head to theaters, 20th Century Fox's true story adaptation Eddie the Eagle , Lionsgate's action-thriller Gods of Egypt and Open Road Films' crime thriller Triple 9 . Also opening in limited release is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, which will also debut simultaneously on Netflix, a re-issue of Akira Kurosawa 's Ran and Tere Bin Laden - Dead Or Alive . Every since it was announced, there has been much speculation and debate that Wolverine 3 will be based on the classic Marvel comic book story Old Man Logan . Today, sources close to the production allegedly confirm that this final sequel for Hugh Jackman will indeed be based on this source material. And according to DenofGeeks , 20th Century Fox is releasing the movie in theaters with an R rating . Way back in July of 2015, Hugh Jackman asked his Twitter followers to name what they wanted to see most in Wolverine 3. While he received thousands of suggestions, the top choice was for Logan to display his berserker rage. And a majority of the fans want this popular X-Men mutant to have an onscreen rematch with Sabertooth. If the latest report is true, this impending fight will be the bloodiest, most violent brawl ever created for the franchise. And it will surely put Wolverine's Adamantium claws to perfect use. Many fans have longed to see an R rated Wolverine as portrayed by Hugh Jackman, and they nearly got their wish with the 2013 sequel The Wolverine , which did arrive on the home market in an unrated director's cut. Now, multiple sources close to the production claim that Wolverine 3 has been targeting an R rating long before Deadpool 's stunning success at the box office. It is further stated that director James Mangold and his team have long wanted to bring Hugh Jackman 's Logan saga to a very violent and gory end, which falls inline with what plays out in the Old Man Logan comics. Written by Mark Millar with art from Steve McNiven, the Old Man Logan arc is infamous for its extreme action. The Marvel Comics saga was published in June 2008 and ran through September 2009, spread across the paces of Wolverine #66 through #72, along with Wolverine Giant-Size Old Man Logan. The plot follows an aging Logan in a distant post-apocalyptic future. Magneto, Dr. Doom, and the Red Skull have divided the dystopian United States amongst themselves after the X-Men team comes to a mysterious end. With a wife and two children, Logan has abandoned his Wolverine persona, and refuses to ever extract his claws again. In the pages of this Marvel comic, fans witness extremely graphic decapitations and gory murders. And the hero at the center of it all has a robust lust for blood. Many believed the adaptation would be impossible for 20th Century Fox to bring to the big screen, since a number of Marvel owned characters such as Hulk and Hawkeye play an important role. It has been rumored in the past that Patrick Stewart 's Charles Xavier, who is confirmed to be in the movie, is taking over the Hawkeye role. In the book, a blind Hawkeye hires Wolverine to deliver a secret package to New Babylon. Wolverine 3 will probably arrive in theaters with a new title, but it's unclear if we'll actually see Old Man Logan on the marquee. The X-Men spinoff will hit theaters on March 3, 2017. The Flash – Which is Which? My greatest party trick, by far, is my ability to tell the different generations of Flashes apart by simply looking at their costumes. And while it may risk my own popularity among Flash fans, I’ve decided to share the trick to doing this. I usually keep to the most famous four DC heroes who have each called themselves “the fastest man alive”, as even my nerdiest of friends have only a passing interest in the fringe Flash characters. Therefore, I’ll tell you how to tell apart Jay Garrick , Barry Allen , Wally West , and Bart Allen . Gay Garrick - Golden Age Flash. 
\ Gay Garrick was the Golden Age Flash. Gay Garrick is most likely the easiest flash to tell apart from the others. Jay Garrick is the Golden Age Flash, and while the other three dress in red, form fitting, body suits, Jay wears a combination of all three primary colours. The first Flash wears a red long sleeved t-shirt, with a yellow lightning bolt coming up from the waist and extending to his left shoulder. He also wears blue pants and red boots, reminiscent of the God Mercury’s, complete with wings. Finally, the trade mark of Garrick is his silver, dome shaped, brimmed hat, outfitted with its own set of wings. Truthfully, if someone asks you to tell Jay apart from the Flash fleet, the only struggle should be remembering his Name. BART ALLEN. 
Bart Allen as Kid - Flash. The most unlikely Flash you will be asked to identify is Bart Allen. Bart is the grandson of Barry Allen and the cousin- once-removed of Wally West. Though Bart did have his own stint as the scarlet speedster, he is widely recognized as the least favourite Flash. Even I, who considers Bart my favourite DC character, must admit that Bart fell short as the Flash. Most Flash fans agree that Bart added much more to the Flash family as Impulse or at least Kid Flash. That being said, he can be tricky to identify, as he wears exactly the same costume as his Grandpa Barry. (Seriously, its stated several times that he is just wearing Barry’s costume, not even a replica. Talk about lazy.) Luckily, Barry’s costume has openings in the mask for the eyes, meaning that you are able to see the colour of the Allen’s eyes. Bart’s eyes are golden yellow, while Barry’s are blue. That is the only legitimate way to tell the two apart. 
BERRY ALLEN AND WALY WEST. AND THAT brings us to the comparison that will throw many a flash fan for a loop: Wally West and Barry Allen. These two are by far the most popular Flashes in modern times, especially with Barry being the title character in the new CW show “The Flash” and Wally being the Flash in the animated Justice League movies and shows. The reason telling these two apart is so difficult falls heavily on the shoulders of the artists. Many artists put their own spin on the heros’ costume, making it even harder to tell Barry’s from Wally’s, but here’s some general differences: Waly And Berry Side By Side. 
Barry’s costume is a matte tomato red, while Wally’s is a shiny dark red * Barry’s belt is a continuous lightning bolt circling his waist, while Wally’s is a lightning bolt resulting in a “V” shaped drop at the front of his waist * Barry has wings on his boots, while Wally doesn’t All of these, however, have been changed in one issue or another, making the line of distinction murky. The only constant is, again, the eyes. Barry’s eyes are always visible through eye holes in his costume, while Wally’s are usually covered in a white material. That being said, if Wally’s eyes happen to be visible in some drawing of him, his eyes are green, while Barry’s, as stated above, are blue. And there you have it. My greatest secret. Use this information wisely.
For about as long as we knew that Black Panther would be introduced in Captain America: Civil War , we’ve known he was going to be a pivotal character in the story. But exactly how he would fit into the existing universe was far from clear. Now we have a bit more detail about how the African hero chooses his side, or more accurately, how it’s chosen for him. We already heard the rumor that Black Panther’s primary goal in the new film was to take down The Winter Soldier . Now a new report is confirming that this is the case. As the saying goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. This appears to be the relationship that Panther and Iron Man will have in Civil War . It doesn’t sound like the two will necessarily agree on much. Instead, the two have a common interest in taking down Captain America’s best friend Bucky Barnes, and so they will work together. According to the story in Entertainment Weekly , Black Panther has "serious issues" with the Winter Soldier -- so he’s not a hired gun or a soldier doing his job. Rather, Panther (Chadwick Boseman) has his own motives, whatever they may be. Bucky Barnes may no longer be The Winter Soldier anymore, but that guy did a lot of bad stuff in his day, so it’s possible he spent some time in Africa making people’s lives difficult. The Black Panther’s allegiance is also described as being "in flux," which implies that while things may begin with Panther and Iron Man on the same side, they may not necessarily end that way. It’s heavily implied in the current trailer for Captain America: Civil War that The Winter Soldier is not too blame for the event at the film’s center, if this is eventually made clear to Black Panther we may see him switch sides. If this is the case, we could very well see Black Panther play the kingmaker role in the movie. If he switches sides between Iron Man and Captain America, he could very well shift the balance of power in the film when he does so. We’ve seen where most of the characters are going to land when sides are chosen, and if both Black Panther and Spider-Man join Iron Man’s side, as has been implied, it certainly gives the guy in the metal suit a serious advantage. Captain America: Civil War will only be the set up for an eventual Black Panther film in 2018, so whatever side he ends up will have repercussions long past this movie. How do you want to see Black Panther get used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
However dim hope seemed in the first place, fans of both Supergirl and The Flash perked up at news that Warner Bros. had a month or so to work out a potential multi-network crossover for its DC heroes this season. Sadly, that ship seems to have sailed, according to mutual executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. Where previously DC TV magnate Greg Berlanti had spoken of at least some internal conversations toward a crossover of the CW and CBS heroes, Entertainment Weekly ’s newest interview with fellow Flash (and Supergirl ) producer Andrew Kreisberg doesn’t quite live in the same ambiguity: Any word on a potential crossover with Supergirl? No. We’re making Flash, and we’re making Supergirl. Ouch. Earlier in January, Berlanti had offered: I would love it, a lot of things would have to go right and people would have to say ‘Yes.’ It would have to figured out very soon. It would all have to be figured out in the next month or so. As it remains right now we’ve talked internally about how cool it would be, but we haven’t had official conversations. [The CW chief Mark Pedowitz] is supportive. Prior to that, Kreisberg even questioned the legality of any such crossover , including among the looser Legends of Tomorrow . Should a crossover ever actually occur, it might make more sense for The Flash to drop by Supergirl , given the former’s exploration of parallel Earths, and the latter’s establishment of Superman as its realm’s only major hero. There’s always next season, but are both Supergirl and The Flash better served keeping separate for now?
A new Facebook page launched today, called DC Films Official , and so far the only two pieces of content they’ve posted are the DC Films logo (which you can see below) and this concept art of the Justice League members. Warner Bros has since confirmed that this image is legitimate. Presumably this piece will be seen on tonight’s CW special DC Film’s Present: Dawn of the Justice League , which is not only going behind the scenes on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Wonder Woman , but also featuring the new Suicide Squad trailer. 
Since Flash is in the corner and dealing with major glare, it’s hard to make out exact details on his costume , but a couple things are noticeable. Namely, his costume is that familiar shade of red, as opposed to the TV Flash, who is currently rocking a crimson look. The lightning bolt logo on Ezra Miller Flash’s chest is also much larger than usual, though it doesn’t look like there’s the white circle behind it. Moving over to Cyborg , he looks like his standard, sleek and silver self, complete with cybernetic eye, though we can’t tell whether he has his cannon arm. As for the other heroes, they look just like they have in other images, though I believe this is the first time we’ve seen Jason Momoa’s Aquaman from the waist down (excluding pictures of him in toy form). DC Comics fans will notice that there’s one notable hero missing from the lineup: Green Lantern. Aside from 2020’s Green Lantern Corps , it’s been heavily reported that he’ll also be part of the DCEU’s Justice League, just like in the comics (though we still don’t know if it will be Hal Jordan or John Stewart). So not seeing him with the other six heroes is weird, especially considering he was a founding member of the New 52 Justice League, which is what the DCEU team is based off of. This could just be because they haven’t found the actor to play him yet, but it’s possible that the Emerald Knight’s introduction is being saved for the end of Justice League: Part One or even 2019’s Justice League: Part Two . So even though the other six are raring to go, we may have to wait longer to see the ring slinger. At the very least, we’ll see Flash and Cyborg officially join forces with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman when Justice League: Part One is released on November 17, 2017.

According to TVLine , Griffin Grey will make his debut appearance on The CW superhero drama series in April. Casting for the role is reportedly underway. In New Earth, Griffin Grey was friends and roommates to Bart Allen, the original character known as Impulse, the second Kid Flash, and the fourth hero known as The Flash. They worked together at Keystone Motors. One day at work, Griffin and Bart were caught in an explosion caused by a bomb set by Luke Thatcher, an ex-employee of Keystone Motors who was seeking revenge after he was replaced by a robotic assembly line. Jay Garrick, who was operating as the Flash at the time, rushed Griffin to the hospital. Griffin suffered severe organ trauma and a broken fibula. But surprisingly, all of his injuries had been healed the following day, and he began exhibiting strange powers, including being able to emanate strange green lightning-like energy. Since then Griffin served Keystone City with his new powers. However, his extraordinary abilities came at a cost. His body started to age incredibly fast, his skin began to wrinkle and his hair turned grey. When Bart began operating as the Flash, Keystone welcomed its favorite hero with open arms, and Griffin was humiliated. Since then, Griffin worked hard to regain the favor of the populace. Griffin isn't the only character from the comics who is set to appear in season 2. Eliza Harmon (Allison Paige), a.k.a.
